The NIH has internship programs you can apply for. Check for apprentice programs in your area. Some companies are popping up. If you want to work as a Medical Laboratory Scientist and only have a B.S. in microbiology, all you need to do is find a one year program at a hospital in your area that is accredited by the NAACLS. You can check for programs available in your area on that site. The programs will be offered at Universities and or Hospitals. You should have had the opportunity to do Undergraduate Research in your University while you were earning your B.S. Microbiology is a great field and that research time alone with recommendation letters from your Professors should be enough to land you a job as a microbiologist in most places as entry level. It's not a worthless degree. Hope that helps.
like the title says, I recently graduated from CSULA CLS program and had already taken and passed the ASCP exam. If anyone have any questions to ask regarding the CSULA program, post them!
Hi! I re-applied for the CSULA CLS training program for Fall 2015. Since I am a re-applicant, do you think I have a better chance of getting in? Since I applied, I've been working a full-time job as a lab tech at a winery and did some volunteer work at a public health laboratory. I already have my trainee license and I don't know if that will improve my chances. Also, how many applicants did they take when you applied?

Starting a new thread for people who have applied for the the Fall 2015 cycle.
I got a faculty interview invitation from SFSU for this week and for those of you who went through the process, can you share your experience? From looking at the threads on here, seems like for the faculty interview, there's a short essay portion, a lab practical/ math portion, and then your 10-minute interview. Please correct me if I'm wrong. Is the essay going to be similar to the personal statement. What do they ask for the lab practical/ math portion (serial dilution, pH problem)? Lastly, what kind of questions are asked in the faculty interview? The interview is only 10 minutes, so I want to be well prepared.
Thank you for everyone who responds in advance! Best of luck to all the applicants!

Clinical Laboratory Scientist Forum - CLS vs PA: It really depends on what personality ty...
It really depends on what personality type you are. If you are a people person, then go PA. If you like to work alone, go CLS. I hate to hear people say how great it is to have patient interaction in their jobs. Unless you had actually worked with patients before (I have as a rad tech), you have no idea how crazy and demanding some patients are.
Patients think they are God over you. You have to take their lumps, never mind getting sued or having complaints over the most trivial things. I just want to work to make a living, with as little hassle as possible, hence why I switched careers.
Getting constant calls from doctors and nurses for results is way better than being a slave to some overbearing patient that can cost me my job. The choice is yours.

Clinical Laboratory Scientist Forum - CLS/Med Tech Salary Negotiations in NYC: As medical laboratory professionals, we ...
As medical laboratory professionals, we stand at a crossroads. As anyone who works in the field is painfully aware, medical laboratory professionals are generally not paid as well as other allied healthcare workers with similar education and/or licensure with the possible exception of those working in California. In New York City, committees at hospitals around the city are in negotiations with their respective administrations under the guidance of 1199 SEIU representatives. Negotiations such as these that have happened in the past have produced no results. The answer that we received at that time was that unless "the market moved" there was nothing that the individual institutions could do to equalize laboratory wages with other professionals. This time, however, we are receiving much different feedback from the administrations due to the fact that laboratory management is finally acknowledging the severe personnel shortages that are happening and will happen in the future as a significantly aging population of workers retires. We would like to ask any laboratory professionals around the country who are interested in improving our profession which, as you all realize, is essential to the operation of any medical facility, to join with us in this fight. We realize that in most areas laboratory professionals are not represented by unions and we, in New York, have the great fortune to be part of a very large and powerful national union. Please think about adding your voice to these very important negotiations. Any suggestions, collations of data, or presentations that any of you think would further our cause, please feel free to contact any of us at the major medical centers in New York. We will find a way to communicate either through this website or personally with anyone who shows interest. We can and will win the fight to equalize our salaries!

I interviewed for CSULA last year, got wait listed and eventually didn't make the cut. They had 3 interview dates so I'm guessing the first wave of interview invitations went out. Did anyone else get invited to an interview that isn't on Feb. 25th? I'm guessing another wave of interview invites will be coming out for another interview date but this is all just speculation.
