The whole process starts with the school going through all the applications, then give the approved ones to lab managers to choose. From what I know, only 40 goes to the managers and they had over 200 applicants. Like you, I needed more pre-reqs and I did those at CSUDU as well as online. However, since there weren't as many applicants when I applied, they didn't care too much about the online classes. We did have classmates that were older. I know all my classmates have gotten full-time jobs at their sites, except for citrus valley; they got per-dimes. I am working at the site where I trained right now. I do know that LAC-USC is majorly short on CLSes.
I had nightmares trying to get classes at CSUDH, I ended up just taking some online instead.

Even with a high enough GPA, it is almost impossible to get a lab technician, lab assistant or QA/QC job for me. I may just end up working as a grocer or something else in retail which is very unimpressive to the admissions boards of CLS programs in California. For anyone who has got into a CLS program, how important is it that you have a job in a laboratory? Is it almost a deal killer if you don't have laboratory experience? How the hell do you even get a job in a reference lab? I don't know any reference labs other than Quest. I've tried emailing professors in various universities within 50 miles of me and getting no response or rejections.
I'm currently an intern in the EMC program. The last few years the program has received about 60 applicants, interviews 12-15, and accepts 4. With your stats and experience you have a chance to get into the program. I am unsure of how other programs select their students, but at EMC each applicant is scored in certain criteria- GPA, references, laboratory experience, personal statement, etc. The top 12 or so all rank extremely close in their score and are invited to interview. Me, personally, I had a 3.3 general , 3.45 science. While in college , I did 3 years of micro/immunology research and worked a year at the state doing disease surveillance. As for a tip, I would suggest prepping for any interview you have with a program. I probably spent 20-30 hours preparing for my interview. I compiled a list of about 50 interview questions, typed up my personal answers, and rehearsed them until I sounded confident and natural. I still had to think on my feet in the interview in some aspects, but it really helped put me at ease for the interview, and some of the questions I had previously put thought and work into did come up. If you have any other questions, feel free to ask away.
Do you still remember what kind of questions did they ask you? Eisenhower only choose 4 students per year out of 60 applicants. It's really competitive. Do they give you stipend enough for a living?

The CLS at a reference lab with 3-5 years of experience only got 75K/year.

I also got licensed as a phlebotomist, but had extremely hard time finding employment. I was lucky because one of the lab needed a bunch of bilingual phlebotomists, and I got hired. Then with that experience, I was able to land a lab associate position in a chemistry lab.

Hello, I graduated with a degree in a non science with a 2.1 GPA a few years ago. Yes I know, very bad! However, I realized my mistakes toward the end of my degree so my last 20 units are with a 4.0 GPA and I continued to take community college classes in which I have a 4.0 in another 20 units. I still have A LOT of prerequisites to complete to be eligible to apply for a CLS internship (about 10 more classes) however I was wondering, if I continue this 4.0 (or close to) trend, will internships be able to overlook my low 2.1 undergraduate GPA or will that haunt me in my internship search? I do have a year of lab experience from when I was an undergrad but its old experience so I'm not sure how this will effect my chances. I really want to do CLS, but I dont want to waste 1 year taking classes if theres no hope for me to get an internship in California. I wish I could just reapply year after year but fact of the matter is I have a family to take care of so I can only try for so long before I need to just focus on making money somehow even if its doing something I dont love (and i would LOVE if I got to work as a CLS!)

I disagree, I think nurses are overpaid and will be taken over by more specialized people (although it has not been done yet, many immigrants have taken the nursing jobs here hence the competition). I see a great demand in CLS but you always will need people to make sure machines are operated correctly, etc. If technology will take over everyones jobs then everyone is screwed, not just cls but everyone. What will be left? therefore your statement is impossible

Hi I was thinking of attending new york methodist hospital (I have no choice as I can not waste 2 more years of my life going to CUNY and can not travel all the way to staten island anyway). What tests do I take? I wanted to get the book ahead of time so that way while i'm attending school I can review chapters of the book. Which books do I get to prepare for certification and can I work anywhere in the US or only new york? Also does anyone know how the pay is in nj? Thanks and feel free to add any advice, input, comments, complaints about the programs or about the profession.

Hi, guys, I just got a qualified letter from CDPH, I was allowed to directly take the certifying organization examination. But I do not quite understand one sentence indicated in the letter "LFS must receive the successful passing result from the certifying organization within 150 days of your application for licensure by the state of California or your application will be abandoned". What doe it exactly mean? Does it mean that I have to take and pass the exam within 150 days after I applied online (registration date) and paid $230. For example, I applied online on May 1, 2014, I got the qualified letter on May 15, 2014, and I must take and successfully pass the exam before October 1, 2014, is it correct? If so, the time is very limited since I can seriously prepare my exam before I was approved to be qualified. If I can not get ready or fail to pass the exam within 150 days, does it mean that I should apply online again and pay $230 fee again, send a new attestation letter and then wait for another new a qualified letter? (T think LFS will keep all the transcripts, work verification letter and AACRAO report, so I do not need to request to resend them to LFS again), I am really confused about this! Anyboy can help me with these questions? BTW, does the qualified letter has expire date? It seems that CDPH website does not indicate this. Anyway many thanks for any attention, suggestion and comments. sj

Howdy y'all, I plan on applying to a CLS program this Spring 2015 but I'm not sure which school to apply to! I live in Houston, TX and my choices are UTMB (a bit of a commute, 2 yr), MD Anderson (2 yr), and Texas Tech (1 year online program). Has anyone been to any of these programs and, if so, do you recommend it? There's just pros and cons with each of these and I'm not sure which one to choose. The prerequisites differ for each of them and I need to make a decision so I can plan my spring and fall class schedule accordingly. So, any thoughts?

Hi everyone! I've been lurking this forum for about a month now after deciding to go for a CLS program, so I apologize if this question has been asked a million times. So I graduated last year with a BS Chemistry. I took most of the prereqs required for CLS programs when I was an undergrad. The only classes I'm missing are hematology, immunology, and medical microbiology. I checked my nearest CC, and what do you know, they don't offer it :( I was looking at online courses for Fall 2014, but a lot of them are crazy expensive! Are there any other ways for me to get these classes out of the way? Or can someone suggest other schools that offer online courses at a reasonable price? PS: Is there a difference between general microbiology and clinical microbiology? Thanks!

Hello. I had a question about National University CLS courses. I have a B.S. degree from an CSU college, but am missing some prerequisite courses(quantitative analysis and medical microbiology) required for the 1+ CLS programs. I have been looking at possibly taking them online from National University. I was wondering if anyone has had any troubles with any of the 1+ CLS programs not accepting National University classes? Thanks!

Clinical Laboratory Scientist Forum - CLS vs PA: From what I have heard, both are fairly ...

From what I have heard, both are fairly competitive. As far as I know, there are more PA programs than there are CLS programs (more total students accepted into a program each year), but competition for each program is fairly similar (for GPA, experience, etc). The more important issue here is what you actually would like to do with your life. CLS and PA are hugely different career options-- one involves chiefly laboratory work, equipment troubleshooting, very little patient interaction. ClS usually have contact with the nurses/PAs/MDs calling and yelling for their STAT results, etc. PAs are essentially acting physicians. LOTS of patient interaction, usually with NO laboratory bench work involved, except for in very rural clinic environments. I'd figure out which of those sounds more appealing to you before you worry about your GPA for either. In general I think you can get into either program with >3.0, as long as you've got solid relevant experience and glowing recommendations.
